Selling Success Hasn't Really Changed

Good morning Sales Champions!

Have you ever heard someone say that "My business and industry have changed so much in the last 10 years?"  Have you ever said that?  If you have, let's think about it for a moment.  Has your business or industry really changed that much in the last 5, 10, or even 20 years?  

I believe that business hasn't changed that much in this respect.  As sales professionals we still have to find needs and fill them.  That is it.  As sales professionals we find their wounds and put salve on them to heal them.  Now, how we do that has changed.  Sales is much more about relationships today then it was 20 years ago.  Sales is much more about networking today than it was say 8 years ago.   Our tools have also changed such as the internet (email, social networking sites, etc...)

But, when it comes right to it, our business and career success still comes down to focusing on the basics of finding and serving customers.

Marketing vs. Selling

By Brian Tracy

Marketing and selling are two separate activities. Marketing is the process of lead generation. Marketing embraces everything you do up to the point of sale. The design, development, and determination of the exact product or service that you are going to sell are the first part of marketing. The second is to think through every element of the marketing mix before you begin. These elements are product, price, promotion, packaging, positions, and people.

Product/Service
What exactly is your product or service? What does it do for your customer? How does it improve his or her life or work? What products or services are you going to offer? Any changes in the product or service offered can dramatically change the entire nature of your business.

Price
How much are you going to charge for your product? Will you sell wholesale or retail? How do your prices compare with those of your competitors? Are they higher or lower? How do you justify your prices, whatever they are?

Place
Where exactly are you going to locate your business? Where are you customers? Do you sell from a retail storefront or by telephone and Internet from your offices?

Promotion
How do you advertise and attract customers? Once you have attracted potential customers, what is the specific sales process that you use to convert those prospects into customers? What systems do you use for developing and maintaining successful sales process to get customers to buy from you?


Packaging
What do your product or service, place of business, and every other visual element of your company look like to your customers? Customers are extremely visual. They form their first impression about you and your company within four seconds of seeing you for the first time. Looking from the outside, is every part of the customers visual experience with regard to your company excellent in every way?

Positioning
How are you positioned in the minds and hearts of your customer? What words to your customers use when they talk about you and describe you to others? If your name were mentioned in a customer survey, how could customers and non customers refer to you and your business?

People
Who exactly are the people who interact with your customers? What do they look like? How do they dress? What do they say? Prospective customers are largely emotional. They make most of their decisions based on the way they are treated by the people in your organization. What kind of "people experience" do customers have when they deal with you? How could it be improved?

Action Exercise
Determine what you will have to do to get your customers to give you a nine or ten score on the question, "Based on your experience with us, would you recommend us to your friends and family?"

The Secret to Sales Marketing Success

One concept in sales marketing that is so under used but will bring you out of sales mediocrity to fortune and fame is a Unique Selling Proposition or USP. Focusing on the USP in every advertising and sales marketing effort is the key to creating super successful products and services.

The one main reason you need to craft a powerful USP is a problem which faces most company's today, fierce competition for your product or service. Look around at the numerous choices you have when purchasing cars, televisions, cell phones, food items. You are bombarded every day with sales marketing messages and the ones that are unique ultimately get your attention.

So your USP must make your product or service stand out from the crowd.

You have to stand for something that prospects can reduce to a simple concept and store somewhere in their mind, saying, "That's you. You will bring me these benefits. You will solve these problems for me without these frustrations."

Customers don't want to remember a thousand things about you. They just want to remember something simple and important, what you will do for them. Something problem solving, something benefit producing, something relevant to their interests.

You must try to get into your customer's mind as being first. You want to become the biggest or best at something. You want to become known as "number one" for providing some benefit they desire.

This is a key sales marketing principle. If you are seeking to dominate a market in a competitive environment, one of the best things you can do is to be first in your customer's mind.

If you can lay claim in a customer's mind as being first for some special feature, promise or benefit before everyone else claims it, then in their minds you can "own" that sales marketing promise. You can be "the person," "the product" or "the business" that satisfies that particular claim.

All you have to then do is live up to your reputation - and maintain your product's quality or your services as you promised so that this belief manifests in fact and is continually supported.

Just imagine what would have happened if M&M candies melted in your hand!

Live up to your reputation and you'll quickly own a secure spot in a customer's mind that will be hard to displace.

To become first in your customer's mind you must paint a simple, memorable, consistent and appealing picture of who you are, what you stand for, and what you're going to do that's attractive and compelling to them. You must make an outrageously exciting promise of service or benefit to the customer.

Furthermore, you must make it abundantly clear how you're unique and dramatically different from everyone else in delivering on those benefits, and everything you say must be entirely believable.

Basically, your USP is a distinct, compelling sales strategy that separates you from all your competitors and answers the question, "Why should I do business with you rather than your competitors . or rather than doing nothing at all?"

If you construct an attractive USP and then plaster it everywhere in your advertising and sales marketing, and if you consistently keep hammering away at presenting your USP over and over again to the consumer's mind, in time you will gain the majority of market-share for your product or service. It takes patience, but it's been done time and time again.

Dominoes did it with their now famous USP:

"Hot, fresh pizza delivered in 30 minutes or less, guaranteed."

Then they topped it off with another great sales marketing idea, a guarantee.

Sphere of Influence

Create a list of at least 100 people you know. Send out an introductory letter telling them about your product or service. Talk with each person at least every three months. Using cold calling effectively for sales lead generation requires five key ingredients. Target the market you are going to call. Know your objective (get an appointment, get a name). Have a memorized script. Smile. Be prepared for rejection. Have fun!

Knocking on doors

This method is much the same as cold calling. I used this very effectively in real estate. I used to knock on doors year round. Do you think people would remember someone who knocked on their door in the middle of winter?

Farming

This is another technique that is used effectively in real estate and can be adapted to any product or service. Pick a market of 200 homes or businesses and become the only person they think of in regards to your product or service.

Seminars

Seminars are great for sales lead generation. People who attend your seminar have an interest in the information you are presenting and a need for your product or service.

Mass mailing

Also known as direct marketing. Successful used of this method requires mailing a well written sales letter to a targeted mailing list.

Newspapers

Pay attention to the local news, business and announcements sections. Look for the people who get promoted, have babies, buy and sell homes and start up new businesses. There may be leads here for your product or service.

Email publications

Getting email addresses of past and current clients, your sphere of influence and any one else you come in contact with is a great way to keep in touch.

Hairstylist

Most everyone has a barber or hairstylist they use on a regular basis. When ever I'm in the chair the conversation covers a variety of topics.

Offer them a $1 for every card they pass out or motivate them even more by offering a percentage of the sale that result from their referral.

I've even picked up business myself while getting my haircut. Keep your ears and eyes open at all times.

Daily Contacts

Every day when you leave the house take twenty business cards with you and make it a point to give them away. That's twenty cards times five work days. If you're really ambitious, do it on Saturday and Sunday also.

When you're looking to generate lots of quality sales leads the more lines you have in the water the more fish you're apt to catch.

These are all effective methods of sales lead generation and should be used regularly.

Build Self-Esteem with Words of Hope

We are to be motivators to our fellow man.  We are to encourage each other.  The ancient writer said, “Don’t use foul or abusive language.   Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.  Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of malicious behavior.”

 

In my opinion, Zig Ziglar is one of the top motivational speakers off all time.   Zig grew up in a large family in Mississippi.  When he was a young boy, tragedy struck the Ziglar family when his father died.  Without the love and support of his wonderful mother, Zig probably wouldn’t have grown into the man he is today. 

 

At that time, Zig was too young to get a job to help support the family, but soon he was old enough to work in the garden.  Mrs. Ziglar gave Zig an assignment of planting peas in the garden.  When little Zig had finished his assignment, he went to his mother and said, “Mama, I’m done.”  Mrs. Ziglar went out to see how he had done.  The way Zig puts it, “She went out to inspect to make sure she got what she expected.”  When Mrs. Ziglar had seen the job little Zig had done with those peas, she was not happy.   “Oh no,”  she said.

 

“What’s the matter Mama?”  Zig knew very well what the problem was.  He hadn’t done a very good job with those peas.  Mrs. Ziglar knew exactly how to get through to her young son.  She said, “Son, what you did hear would be fine for most boys, but you’re not most boys.  You are my boy and you can do better.” 

 

You see what she did?  She separated his behavior from who he is.  She praised the performer and critiqued the performance.  His job performance needed critiqued.  It stunk!  However, she kept his self esteem in tact.  Zig talks about what an influence this made on his life.  It is no wonder that Zig has been able to motivate so many people.  My friend, we can do the same thing as Mrs. Ziglar.  We can build a person’s self esteem by presenting words of hope.  Who can you uplift today?
